Blackwell Companion Companion Philosopher Philosophy
A Companion to Contemporary Political Philosophy by Robert E. Goodin, Political philosophy has become an active and central area of research in the past two or three decades. The editors have taken a broad view of the range of issues that are relevant to political philosophy, and the Companion covers the contributions of economics, history, law, political science and sociology as well as philosophy - analytic and continental. In general, political philosophers are not just interested in the routines that govern politics but also in the various systems which politics may be used to shape. They are concerned with all the institutions that help to determine what John Rawls describes as the 'basic structure' of society. To provide a comprehensive guide to current thinking in political philosophy, Robert Goodin and Philip Pettit have divided the book into three parts: Disciplinary Contributions, Major Ideologies and Special Topics. In addition, the Companion's 41 chapters have been contributed by some of today's most distinguished academics, drawn from several different disciplines. The first part of the book consists of a series of extended essays on the contribution that a number of different disciplines have made and are making to current debates. Analyses of political ideologies form the next section, followed by discussions of major concepts ranging from virtue and equality to sociobiology and environmentalism that form the subject matter of philosophical debate.
Companion to Rationalism The rationalist impulse has guided western philosophical thought from its beginnings in ancient Greece to the present day. In this Companion, a cast of established and rising stars in philosophy lays out the historical roots, the celebrated expressions, the controversies, and the contemporary determinations of rationalist thought. The volume opens with essays examining the nature of the rationalist impulse to philosophize, and the distinction between rationalism and empiricism. The focus of the remainder of the volume is on the ?golden age? of rationalism in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. However, this is set in the context of its historical development and the appearance of rationalist themes in recent thought. The material is organized chronologically, and various philosophical methods and viewpoints are represented throughout.

Beard (female companion) - In gay slang, a beard is a female companion used to hide a gay man's sexuality by appearing in public as if she and the gay man were a heterosexual couple. To do this with a heterosexual woman without letting your companion know you are gay is generally considered poor form. Companion dog - Companion dog usually describes a dog that does not work, providing only companionship as a pet, rather than usefulness by doing specific tasks. Many of the toy dog breeds are used only for the pleasure of their company, not as workers, but any dog can be a companion dog, and many working types such as retrievers are enjoyed in North America primarily for their friendly nature as a family pet. Companion weapon - The term companion weapon is used in Historical European Martial Art disciplines to refer to an item used in the non-sword hand while fencing with a rapier or sword.
